Amanita cokeri (Gilbert & Kühner) Gilbert Cap 7-15cm across, flatly convex with veil remnants hanging from the margin; shiny white; smooth, slightly sticky when moist, and dotted with largish white to brownish warts of volval material which become flatter and more cottony toward the margin. Gills free or just attached, close, broad; white to pale cream. Stem 110-195x 10-20mm solid or stuffed, tapering slightly toward the top; white; finely silky, then hairy becoming scaly toward the base; the white, membranous hanging ring near the top of the stem has a thickened edge (sometimes double) and is line above and torn and woolly beneath; the large. spindle-shaped rooting basal bulb has white of pale brown pyramidical warts and recurved scales of volval material, usually arranged in concentric circles at the top of it. Flesh white. Odor slight. Spores ellipsoid, amyloid. 10.1-12.6(12.9)x6.3-7.3(7.7)µ. Deposit white Habitat singly or scattered on the ground in mixed coniferous or deciduous woods, especially oak and pine. Common. Found in southeastern North America. Season July-November. Not edible -avoid. Comment The spores of my specimen are rather small and possibly further examination of this species is necessary. |
